New Jersey- NYC 2015-16

NEW JERSEY- 2015/16

I made these videos on my N.J./NYC trip for 2015.

Some of you have seen them- but I figured I would put them all together here at the end.

I teach on some of these [St. Patrick’s, Danny- Work of art- etc.] so I added the links at the bottom to my word-press site for download.

Some of my North Bergen friends- who don’t live in the hometown anymore [like me] might enjoy some of the footage from the old town.

I did a little experiment on my first week back-

I lived in the car for about a week.

I did not stay/go to my mom’s home until the week was done.

I did this so I could identify with some of my homeless friends- who have done this for years.

You can see it on the first week of videos.

God bless.

1st day back.

Day 2.

https://youtu.be/UTHu_8ZG91U  Danny- 12-23-15

These 2 [Jerome- St. Patrick’s] were taken in NYC

https://youtu.be/IckgCiOiGxg   Jerome- 12-23-15

Jerome is the first homeless man I ever interviewed- he was unique

https://youtu.be/UDwUNXDrHlc  St. Patrick’s cathedral- NYC. 12-23-15

I taught on the steps of St. Patrick’s cathedral- in the beginning you see a few seconds of the actual mass at the historic church.

Staying in the car overnight does have problems- see it on ‘Woke up’.

Day 3.

https://youtu.be/o4MzcvuEVzY  12-24-15 Woke up

12-24-15 I already made 3 videos- this morning. I kid about the accents and stuff- but to be honest-

The language problem [people not being able to speak English] is a major problem here-

We often downplay it- because it’s not politically correct to say ‘we all need a common language [English] spoken- so people can understand each other’.

But it is a huge issue here- no joke.

See it on ‘gas trouble’ ‘Can’t pay’.

https://youtu.be/Ah5aRiGDcFM  12-24-15 Gas trouble-

https://youtu.be/HDCCTOvtm1g 12-24-15 Can’t pay

Today [Thursday] I taught some- ran into most of the guys- and hope to get a video of Nick playing the guitar.

Up till now- I have been staying in the car at night [rented motel for 1 night] and using free wifi at Dunkin Donuts [McDonalds- etc.]

Very difficult to upload videos- takes real long.

Not sure how long I will do it- but it’s sort of an interesting experience- many of my friends have either been homeless- or lived in their cars for years.

So- in a way- I’m seeing some of the stuff they deal with on a regular basis [where to shower? Where can you park- or sit- without people thinking your up to something] all in all- it’s a good experience at this point.

12-25-15- FRIDAY [Merry Christmas all]

https://youtu.be/5EaQPvs1D1U  12-25-15 Christmas morning

5:00 am- Did another full day ‘on the streets’- spent the night in the car and just woke up and made the video.

I’m kind of experimenting with the idea of identifying somewhat with the homeless.

I have had many friends over the years that have been on the streets- or lived in cars.

And it’s obviously inconvenient- but you don’t realize it until you try it.

On the last 2 videos I talk about God becoming man in the person of Christ- and how this identifying with humanity- gave to us a ‘high priest’ who can be touched with the ‘feelings of our infirmities’ [Hebrews]

So- in a sense- when we take upon us the same experiences that others have gone thru- we can identify better with them.

ON VIDEO-

Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.

And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.

And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;

And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.

10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.

11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.

13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

14 And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.

And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord andmy God. John 20:28

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:58

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews

FRIDAY MORNING

- I used some restaurant  bathrooms to change and shave.

I realized if you find a bathroom with a door that locks you can change fast.

I did have clean clothes with me- and as long as you keep the dirty separated from the clean- it works ok.

I realized I can shave in the car as long as I have some water.

These are things you learn along the way.

It would have been easier if it were not Christmas day- lots of the spots are closed.

BAD NEWS?

Just checked my account- the motel charge went thru- I have 150 bucks till payday [some other payments went thru].

That’s still much more than many of my friends who have done this- but the shower option [renting room for 1 night] is out.

I look at the balance because of gas- if I don’t have enough to just go- then I find myself occupying time till payday [last day of month].

Gas is cheap- but I also have direct payments that come out of my account each month-

So if I were on the road- and the card stopped working [debit card] then I would be stuck.

I did get to do my walk around the lake today- Hudson county park.

But Burger king and White castle are closed- those are the spots where I run into most of the guys-

I do want to do a video from the GW bridge one day-

So if no one is around- I might do it today.

GARY-  I teach some on this video [too much?] but wanted you to hear Gary.

Today I did not think I would run into any friends- I went to Blvd. diner for wifi- and sure enough Gary walked in.

We made this video and they offered to pay for my coffee [I should have accepted the offer].

But I tried to pay with the card [debit] and they have a 10 dollar minimum.

So I used their ‘ancient’ ATM machine-

It took 15 minutes- and said transaction approved [for 20 dollars].

I hit ‘no receipt’ to speed it up- and no cash came out.

I went to the car and go some change- but I think I just got robbed for 20.

I really cannot afford it right now.

Marie- Gary’s lady friend met me the day before- Danny introduced us- but Gary was not there.

I told Marie ‘I’m doing a little experiment- living in the car for now- but didn’t want the guys to know’.

I think they know- Marie said she wanted to ask the other day ‘are you staying in your car’.

So- it’s no big deal- but I guess they could tell.

But hope you enjoy the video.

SURPISE  ENCOUNTER- AGAIN.

https://youtu.be/py4415UY8yY  John [DD donuts]

FRIDAY NIGHT

Just got back from the George Washington bridge walk [as I type].

It was funny- I got to the car and made a few wrong turns [lots of blocked streets and stuff].

And I ‘panicked’ like ‘I hope I don’t get lost’!

Lost?

From where?

I’m living in the car for heaven’s sake.

See- you can even get attached to a parking lot!

Ok- I thought it strange to see all the suicide warning signs on the bridge- they are new.

I talked about it on the video.

This might be the longest video I ever made- almost an hour.

But you see some good footage of walking back and forth from N.J. to NYC.

Hope you enjoy it.

NOTE- I made the video- and typed the notes sitting in my car at Hudson County Park [in the rain]

Ill upload tomorrow at Dunkin Donuts [or somewhere else].

What big financial budget was needed for this?

None.

One of the things I want my minister friends to see- is it’s not about money.

Sure- it would be easier to be at my home office- or even a home.

But you don’t need it- you can use the things that you have.

This has been one of my ‘pet peeves’ for many years.

I want you to see how simple all of this is- the friends you see [both in Texas and here] are just friends I made along the way.

The kingdom is about relationships- and sharing with one another- even Marie quoted Jesus- and as far as I know she’s not a Christian.

So- maybe this whole unplanned experience was God’s will.

To be honest- I never know- at least at the start.

Be spontaneous- I left Texas on Sunday- because I heard the song ‘Head East’ [or group?]

So yes- we all have limited time on the planet.

Don’t live ‘too safe’ or you won’t live- at all.

FRIDAY NIGHT- PARKING LOT-

https://youtu.be/UYOvIw6jhiI  Friday night- parking lot

Just finished the GW bridge walk a few hours ago- and being it might be the last night sleeping in the car, I figured I’d do a video for a few minutes.

This will probably be the last time you’ll be able to see- real time- me living in the car like this.

But- like they say ‘you never know’.

I think it was a worthwhile experience- but it’s drained me- and I’m tired at this stage.

12-26-15

SATURDAY MORNING- 2 AM-  https://youtu.be/QciOL5KkDls  Saturday morning- 2 AM

Ok, this might be the last day ‘on the streets’. It’s almost been a week- since I left Texas Sunday morning.

It’s early- and I’m tired.

I’m typing from the Walmart parking lot- and I’m hoping the Dunkin Donuts is open- for coffee.

I’m looking [smelling?] like a homeless guy at this point- and I don’t think the Dunkin donuts people think it’s worth the price I pay for their coffee- for me to sit there and work on the laptop.

I want to go to church tomorrow- but wouldn’t go like this.

So maybe I’ll stay at mom’s house tonight.

That’s where I usually stay when I make these trips.

VERSES-

Deuteronomy 8:1 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.

Deuteronomy 8:2 And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

Deuteronomy 8:3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

Deuteronomy 8:16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

Matthew 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

Matthew 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom ofheaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Matt. 16:19

31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

48 I am that bread of life.

49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

VERSES-

John 3:1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

 12-28-15 MONDAY [morning]

Juan- from Mexico.

https://youtu.be/KnabbHzb1RQ  Juan from Mexico

Cold day today- walked up the block early and ran into a few people.

Danny introduced me to Jack- a cab driver.

Had a good talk. Danny said ‘Jack’s an atheist’.

He said ‘no I’m not- I believe in ‘a’ god- but no religion’.

I said ‘you’re a Deist’ [or Theist- both work].

That’s belief in a Deity- in a general way.

Some of the Founding fathers of our country were Deists.

We had a good talk. After I shut the video [you see Juan- from Mexico on this video].

Danny asked lots of questions- bible stuff.

It was a good one hour discussion- I could have put it on video- but it was just teaching- in a way- that hopefully was beneficial.

Ok- hope to make a few more today- let’s see what happens.

MONDAY AFTERNOON

CAESAR-

Danny introduces me to just about everyone who walks into Burger King.

I don’t video all the interactions- but took one of Caesar. After I shut the video off- Caesar was grateful to have run into us today.

He struggles- is homeless- and has some mental problems.

Yet- he talked honestly about life- and the things he went thru.

Saw nick today- trying to convince him to play the guitar and sing- he’s got talent.

But its cold today- and I think the warm spell is gone for good.

So- hope you enjoy these updates.

VERSES-

Genesis 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Genesis 17:2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

Genesis 17:3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

Genesis 17:4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

Genesis 17:5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

Genesis 17:6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

Genesis 17:7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

Genesis 17:8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

Genesis 17:15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

Genesis 17:16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

Genesis 17:17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

Genesis 17:18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

Genesis 17:19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

Genesis 17:20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

Genesis 17:21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

Hebrews 11:9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

Hebrews 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Hebrews 11:11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

Hebrews 11:12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

. Acts 2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.

Acts 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;

Acts 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

Acts 2:32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

Acts 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

Acts 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

Acts 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.

Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Galatians 4:22 For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.

Galatians 4:23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.

Galatians 4:24 Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.

Galatians 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.

Galatians 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Galatians 4:27 For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.

Galatians 4:28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

Galatians 4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

Galatians 4:30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.

Galatians 4:31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Ephesians 2:14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

Ephesians 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

Ephesians 2:17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

Ephesians 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

Ephesians 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

Ephesians 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Acts 15:14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.

Acts 15:15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

Acts 15:16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

Acts 15:17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.

Acts 15:18 Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.

Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

[past posts- verses- new stuff, below]

Psalm 108:10 Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom? [I wrote North Bergen/NYC a few years back- for the word Edom. I found it interesting because this was the first chapter I read when I arrived in New Jersey].

Psalm 110:7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head. [I read this Psalm on the morning I left- I took it as ‘seek me- even stop [rest stop overnight] and do your normal reading of scripture- and watch a video from the previous week’. The Psalms always seem to have meaning- direction- in a different way than when I read the ‘regular’ bible chapters at night.

I did teach on Manna [bread/word from God] on this trip- and yes- I felt I ‘heard’ God thru the Psalms on a daily basis.

Psalm 111:6 He hath shewed his people the power of his works, that he may give them the heritage of the heathen. [Ok- I read this when I got back to Texas.

I hope to talk about it on the video and show you the paintings Danny gave me.

Danny- who is an atheist- gives me stuff.

The verse above can be translated ‘he gives you the property- of the heathen’ [unbeliever].

I didn’t get a chance to even see what the paintings were.

As I hung them up- yes- they were significant.

They were done by an 86 year old man- Danny bought them because he too is an artist- and has taught artists ‘how to paint’.

He told me these were from a man who never had training- yet he said this man had a special gift.

Danny was going to sell them for a few hundred dollars- but actually wanted me to have them.

So- the 2 paintings are-

A man- with a backpack- walking up a mountain.

This is one of the actual ‘images’ I scribble/write- when I feel like I should take the annual trip to the NYC area.

So- it was a sort of confirmation.

The second painting was a bird- flying by the coast.

This is the other image I use- when ‘heading out’- I even spoke about it on some videos before I left [my eagle ring- I talked about it with Crow and Andy].

So- the significance was these paintings were given to me by an ‘unbeliever’ and that’s the first Psalm I read when I got back [you get the property of the heathen].

And both of these paintings came from an 86 year old man- from North Bergen- at the end of his journey in life.

Getting ready to ‘fly away’.

I also found it interesting that right before I left Texas- I started quoting ‘I will give thee the heathen for your inheritance- and the ends of the earth for your possession’- but I never connected it with the Psalm above.

NEW STUFF- On the video I taught some about Francis Xavier [1506-1552] - one of the founding members of the Jesuit order [Society of Jesus] along with Ignatius Loyola.

He met Ignatius at the University of Paris- while pursuing an intellectual career.

Over time Ignatius example [and prodding] convinced him to abandon his own plans to live a comfortable life and serve as a scholar- and become a very effective missionary to the Far East.

Much like the story of John Calvin- who too was persuaded to abandon his own plans to simply be a scholar- and to serve in forming the community in Geneva.

Xavier arrived in Goa [India] and eventually went to Japan.

The king of Portugal- John the 3rd- requested missionaries for the areas Portugal was colonizing in India.

This century [16th] was one of exploration and colonization.

In Japan Xavier had great success- the city of Nagasaki was started to simply provide a place for all the Japanese converts!

There were reported miracles of healing under the ministry of Xavier- and he became one of the most successful missionaries from the Jesuit order.

Xavier came into some controversy- initially in his missionary efforts he was ‘more conservative’ in that he tried to get new converts to abandon all former cultural ties- in order to embrace the faith.

Over time- he sort of ‘mixed’ [called syncretism] the eastern religious practices with the faith.

When the Dominicans and Franciscans saw what was happening- they reported it to the church.

This became such a controversy among the Japanese- eventually the priests were martyred along the road to Nagasaki.

A sad event indeed.

The Protestants neglected the Far East in their missionary efforts- they were primarily trying to reform the church in Europe.

Yet Ignatius and his society were spreading the gospel- in areas that never heard either the Catholic or Protestant message.

All in all- Xavier did a very effective job- and is well respected by both Catholics and Protestants for the work he did.

PAST POSTS-

. ROMANS 8-10

VIDEO- [I cover stuff on the videos that are not in the post- here are a few]

.Council of Trent- what did the Church say?

.Do we get the final say- at the Judgment?

.What are the Catholic virtues- did Paul teach them?

.Augustine, Calvin, Whitfield and Wesley.

.Infusion or Imputation? How bout both!

At the bottom I added some quotes from the Catechism of the Catholic church- to show that the official teaching of the church DOES NOT TEACH SALVATION BY THE LAW- BUT BY CHRIST.

. REMINDER- This is a commentary I wrote years ago- the videos are new.

.CHAPTER 8- FEW POINTS;

1- Did God choose us to believe- or did we choose him?

2- When Paul says ‘he makes our bodies alive’ is he only speaking about resurrection?

3- Does God use difficulty- or is it to be rebuked?

4- Was Paul a ‘hyper- Calvinist’?

(839)ROMAN 8:1-4 ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh [sinful nature] but after the Spirit [new nature]’. Now, having proved the reality of sin and guilt [chapter 7] Paul teaches that those who ‘are in Christ’ are free from condemnation. Why? Because they ‘walk according to the Spirit’ the ‘righteousness of the law is being fulfilled in them’. Having no condemnation isn’t simply a ‘legal function’ of declared righteousness, and Paul didn’t teach it that way! Paul is saying ‘all those who have believed in Jesus and have been legally justified [earlier arguments in chapters 3-4] are now walking [actually acting out] this new nature. Therefore [because you no longer walk according to the flesh] there is no condemnation’! This argument helps bridge the gap between Catholic and Protestant theology, part of the reason for the ongoing schism is over this understanding. After the Reformation the Catholic Church had a Counter Reformation council, the council of Trent. They dealt with a lot of the abuses of the Catholic Church, things that many Catholic leaders were complaining about before the Reformation. They did deal with some issues and reformed somewhat. To the dismay of the more ‘reform minded’ Catholics [with Protestant leanings] they still came down strong on most pre reform doctrines. This made it next to impossible for the schism to be healed. But one area of disagreement was over ‘legal’ versus ‘actual/experiential’ justification. The Catholic position was ‘God can’t declare/say a person is justified until they actually are’ [experientially]. The Protestant side [Luther] said ‘God does justify [legal declaration] a person by faith alone’. Like I taught before, both of these are true. The Catholic view of ‘justification’ is looking ahead towards a future reality [The same way James speaks of justification in a future sense- He uses the example from Genesis 22, when Abraham does a righteous act] while the Protestant view is focusing on the initial legal act of justification [Genesis 15]. Here Paul agrees with both views, he says ‘those who walk after the Spirit [actually living the changed life] have no condemnation’.
